In the motorcycle sector, the analysis of behaviour and experience of the motorcyclist in conjunction with the motorcycle is becoming increasingly important. The focus is on both the fundamental understanding of the complex riding task when riding single-track vehicles, as well as insights regarding properly designed vehicle ergonomics or assistance systems. The combination of limited space and demanding riding environment (e.g. weather, physical activity) make a reasonable evaluation of control and display concepts or assistance systems on the motorcycle even more important. The targeted support of motorcyclists by such systems only comes into play if, for example, the potential for distraction is kept low. In addition, topics such as rider state assessment and training are addressed. Such issues will be investigated in both the motorcycle simulation and in on-road experiments on test tracks and in real traffic. We are looking forward to developing tailored study concepts with you!

SILAB is available in three versions:

SILAB Essential

  • Create routes by flexibly combining predefined traffic scenarios.
  • Included is a comprehensive package with more than 30 restricted-access highway, two-lane highway and city scenarios.
  • In addition, scenarios are included that allow your driver to learn the handling of simulator vehicle step-by-step. This will help drivers who experience simulator sickness or other issues when using the simulation and thus improve the quality of the simulation results.
  • Expand your range of scenarios with predefined scenario packages for different issues (such as distraction, assistance systems, driving ability).
  • Integrate commonly used systems for measuring driver physiology and eye movement.
  • Integrate external hardware and software (such as display and control elements, eye movement detectors) through common used communication interfaces (such as TCP/IP, UDP, CAN).
  • Synchronously record the data collected during the simulation (such as driver inputs, physiological data, characteristics of the simulated vehicle and performance measures such as lane usage) and data from external hardware in detailed log files.
  • Import the recorded files directly into your tool for further processing and analysis (such as Matlab, Statistica, SPSS or Excel).

SILAB Professional

In addition to the functions of SILAB Essential, this version offers the following options:

  • Design your own scenarios in urban, highway and country road environments.
  • Use a graphical editor and a simple script language to define all aspects of a scenario in detail: road geometry, pavement markings, signage, traffic lights, surrounding landscape and buildings, behavior of simulated vehicles, and pedestrians.
  • Modify pre-defined scenarios to your needs.
  • Create your own reusable scenario packages.
  • Use the additional SILAB desktop licenses to develop and test scenarios conveniently at multiple workstations.

SILAB Enterprise

In addition to the functions of SILAB Professional, this version offers the following options:

  • Extend the simulation to your own software and hardware components (such as assistance systems and their sensors, data acquisition hardware, secondary driver tasks).
  • Use programming interfaces for C/C ++, JAVA and Ruby to generate detailed queries of simulation data (road geometry, simulated road users) and to control simulation processes.
  • Integrate models and features developed with Matlab or Simulink into your simulation.

Major field studies have been conducted in real traffic conditions as part of field operational tests (FOT) and naturalistic driving studies (NDS) in recent years. These studies are characterized by the collection of real vehicle data from everyday driving over an extended period of time. The data compiled  has the distinct advantage of reflecting everyday driving behavior in a variety of natural situations while meeting the high demands for further analysis of the data. We have experience in the analysis of FOT/NDS data based on both video analysis and objective time-history data. We will be glad to assist you in planning and implementing field studies and analyzing complex real driving data.

When developing increasingly complex assistance systems, the functional safety of these systems plays an important role. To minimize the risks of malfunctions, safety-related systems should be developed, tested and verified in line with relevant standards (such as ISO 26262). A key component of this process is evaluating the controllability of the systems. We offer custom investigative concepts for evaluating the controllability of systems and assessing the criticality of system failures, both in real vehicle and driving simulator environments. This enables us to provide early support to the development of safe systems. Benefit from our many years' experience conducting clinical studies on topics such as faulty braking interventions and faulty auxiliary steering moments. Our methods put the driver in the focus of our assessment process, allowing us to identify potential problem areas from a controllability aspect and propose targeted solutions.

Static and Dynamic Car Simulation

fahrsimulation-01 fahrsimulation-03

For questions involving the investigation of systems in the early stages of development or scenarios that might pose a risk to other vehicles on the road, the method of choice is the driving simulator. We can flexibly use a full range of platforms adapted to the question at hand and your budget: from static, fixed-base driving simulators to a fully equipped, dynamic driving simulators with our own SILAB simulation software. Alternatively, we can also provide support in studies conducted at your own simulation setup.

Motorcycle Simulation

MotSIM fahrsimulation-02

In the motorcycle sector, research into the behavior and experience of drivers in interaction with the vehicle is becoming increasingly important. Motorcycle simulation allows basic research questions such as stress, distraction, etc. to be addressed as well as applied research in testing various display and control concepts, design of the human-machine interface, etc. in a safe and controlled environment. We can adapt the motorcycle mock-up at any time to address your particular research questions.

Real Driving Tests

realfahrversuche-01 realfahrversuche-02 realfahrversuche-03

When attempting to address questions of controllability, it is fundamentally important to consider real vehicle dynamics by conducting studies in the actual vehicle with test drivers on our test track. The data we collect with the usual instruments or with our in-house SILAB simulation software can be flexibly used for this purpose. We also conduct real driving tests in real traffic conditions, for example, as part of evaluating systems nearing readiness for serial production. We have a wealth of experience in supporting field tests and processing and analyzing real vehicle data collected under field operational tests.

Eye Movement

blickbewegung-01 blickbewegung-02 blickbewegung-03

Detecting drivers' eye movement is key to answering many questions, such as the distraction potential of infotainment systems or assessing driver attentiveness in general. WIVW has a number of different eye tracking systems available that are selected based on the question being addressed, starting with single-camera systems like those found in driver state monitoring systems soon to hit the dealers and all the way to multi-view movement camera systems and portable systems that monitor the driver's field of view.

Psychophysiology

psychophysiologie-01 psychophysiologie-02 psychophysiologie-03

The use of psychophysiological measurement instruments is essential in clinical studies focused on the driver's state as well as detecting driver attentiveness and fatigue in other areas of automotive research. Our institute has a wealth of experience in using a wide variety of methods, including EEG, ECG, EMG, and eyelid movement.
